Build a state. Read what it says.
Every direction is a channel on the desk. Switch a channel on, give it a colour and bring the fader up. Layer as many as you need and watch what the combination does to the performer. Then use the reading below in your report: name the state, explain what it exposes or hides and link it to the moment it serves.

From state to sentence
A strong lighting justification names the state, its intensity, colour and angle, explains what the change exposes or hides, and links it to what the audience is forced to see in that moment. Start each fader at 50% so you have a reference point to brighten or dim from. When you layer, say what each light adds: the brightest light claims focus and every other light shapes the world around it.
